Meeting of the House

Meeting of the House

Currently the House meets at noon on Tuesdays and at 10.00am on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Each sitting day begins with a brief ceremony based on longstanding Westminster traditions. A quorum being present, the Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms will enter the Chamber with the Mace followed by the Speaker and Clerk. The Deputy Serjeant places the Mace on the Table to indicate that the House is in session and the Speaker takes the Chair and reads the Prayer and Acknowledgement of Country (Standing Order 39).

The Speaker may also acknowledge visitors to the Parliament by drawing Members' attention to people seated in the gallery and welcoming them to the Parliament. Acknowledgement of visitors to the Parliament may occur at any time at the Speaker's discretion, but it often happens just prior to Question Time.

A quorum is the minimum number of members (specified in the NSW Constitution Act) who should be in the Chamber for it to transact business (twenty members of the Legislative Assembly exclusive of the Presiding member).
