Stop South Energy proposed Battery Energy Storage System at Inverell

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, We, the undersigned petitioners, express a strong opposition to the proposed South Energy Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development. While the transition to sustainable energy is important, the proposed BESS poses significant risks to public safety, property values, and the local environment. Large-scale lithium battery systems are known to present serious fire and explosion hazards, as demonstrated by incidents such as the 2021 Victorian Big Battery fire in Moorabool, which burned for three days and required extensive hazardous material management. The proposed proximity of this facility to residential and rural properties raises legitimate concerns about toxic smoke exposure, emergency response limitations, and the long-term impact on land valuation and insurance. The development prioritises corporate profit over community safety and due environmental diligence. We ask the Legislative Assembly to urge the Government to reject the approval of the South Energy BESS.
