Free traffic congestion on the Illawarra M1 Motorway by adding an extra lane in both directions between Yallah and West Wollongong.
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The undersigned petitioners wish to raise a great concern regarding the M1 Motorway, a vital road corridor for the residents of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama. With record population growth over recent years, there has been a significant increase in traffic congestion in our locality, leading to immense frustration and inconvenience for the community. It has become evident that the primary cause of this issue is that the M1 Motorway is in need of a critical upgrade by way of an extra lane in each direction between Yallah and West Wollongong to support the growing population in the Wollongong Shellharbour and Kiama local government areas. The traffic build-up during peak hours has reached intolerable levels, causing delays in commuting to work, school, and other essential destinations. Residents are forced to allocate excessive time to their daily commute, resulting in lost productivity and compromised quality of life. Moreover, the congestion poses significant safety hazards, with roads becoming overcrowded and accident-prone due to the sheer volume of vehicles competing for limited space. We ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to prioritise the installation of the extra lanes so that smooth traffic flow can be re-established. Lanes could be installed on the inside of existing lanes by using the current median strip of land available. The current objectives of the NSW state government Illawarra-Shoalhaven Regional Transport Plan, state in objective 4 “Maintain reliable north-south, east-west spines”.
I am a resident of New South Wales
