Include Adolescent Mental Health and Alcohol & Other Drug Beds in the Albury Wodonga Hospital Redevelopment

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The petition of residents of New South Wales draws to the attention of the House the urgent need for dedicated adolescent inpatient mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) beds to be included in the Albury Wodonga Hospital redevelopment. Albury Wodonga Health is the largest regional health service between Melbourne and Sydney, serving communities across the Riverina (NSW) and Hume (VIC) regions with a combined catchment of over 1.3 million people. Despite this, there are currently no local adolescent mental health or youth AOD inpatient beds in the region. Young people experiencing acute mental health crises or substance-related issues are often transferred hundreds of kilometres away - to Boxhill, Melbourne or Orange - separating them from family, schools, and community supports at a critical time. This places additional strain on emergency departments, carers, and regional clinicians, and contradicts national and state commitments to early intervention and care close to home. As Albury Wodonga continues to grow, the hospital redevelopment presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to close this service gap by establishing youth-specific mental health and AOD beds for the cross-border region. The undersigned petitioners, therefore, ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to: - Ensure the Albury Wodonga Hospital redevelopment includes adolescent inpatient mental health and AOD beds; and - Commit to a cross-border service model in partnership with Victoria to provide equitable, local care for young people in the Riverina and Hume regions.
