Adult Crime Adult Time

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, Assembly Youth crime in Casino and across the Northern Rivers of NSW has reached an alarming level. While we fully support our local police and acknowledge their ongoing efforts to keep our community safe, the current laws of this State are failing them and failing us. Loopholes within youth justice laws and sentencing appear to be repeatedly exploited by young offenders, resulting in violent and brazen individuals being returned to the community with minimal consequence. This ongoing situation poses an unacceptable risk to the safety and wellbeing of residents, and urgent action is required. The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to urgently call on the Government to introduce and pass stronger laws that provide meaningful protections for communities in regional NSW. We support the principle that serious offending should carry serious consequences, and we endorse the concept of “adult crime, adult time” where appropriate.
