Allow cast nets in NSW freshwater to remove invasive carp

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The petition of the undersigned residents of New South Wales brings to the attention of the House that European carp (Cyprinus carpio) are an invasive pest fish that damage inland rivers, dams and wetlands by increasing turbidity, destroying aquatic vegetation, contributing to bank erosion and competing with native species. Current NSW recreational fishing rules do not generally allow the use of cast nets in freshwater, which prevents community members from using a simple, low-cost and effective method to remove carp. Allowing cast nets to be used for carp only, and only in waters declared by NSW DPI Fisheries, would enable local and regional communities to assist Government efforts to reduce carp numbers. The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to urge the NSW Government to amend the fisheries rules to permit the use of cast nets in specified NSW freshwater/inland waters for the taking of carp only, and to publish the list of permitted waters.
