Stop targeting Leichhardt with more housing development

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The Inner West is the 4th most densely populated of 125 LGA's in the State. To increase housing supply, 70% of Leichhardt will be rezoned for medium/high density development, proposing over 10,000 new dwellings. Leichhardt will take on the biggest proposed increase in housing of any suburb in the state. We, the undersigned petitioners, are concerned that: • Massive demolition of homes will be needed to achieve this level of development, decimating our communities. • Population and dwellings in Leichhardt will more than double over 15 years, resulting in even less open space than the current 2nd lowest per person in the State. • Leichhardt has no metro station or heavy rail. Existing Light Rail can't be expanded and it cannot cater to mass transport. No major infrastructure is planned to meet this need • Council's Fairer Future plan passed by only one vote. Over 70% of community consultation responses were opposed to the plan. • Even more high density housing in Leichhardt along Parramatta Rd is planned. We, the undersigned petitioners, ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to: 1. Note the overwhelming community opposition to the unprecedented uplift applied to Leichhardt by Inner West council's Fairer Future plan; 2. Reject Fairer Future, and direct Inner West Council to develop a new Local Environment Plan through meaningful consultation with the community; 3. Remove the additional 8,000 dwellings proposed along the Parramatta Road corridor, at least half of which will fall in Leichhardt.
