Spit Bridge Gridlock Needs a Solution

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, We, the undersigned, acknowledge that NSW is experiencing a housing crisis, however a one-size-fits-all approach will not deliver long-term, infrastructure-ready communities. Without coordinated investment, particularly to relieve traffic congestion and increase public transport options, Lower North Shore and Northern Beaches communities will experience reduced liveability and increased health risks. We ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the NSW Government to: 1. Commit to an urgent review of the Spit Bridge and Spit Road/Military Road corridor’s capacity to absorb significant additional traffic, given it is already a known bottleneck and undertake strategic planning to address current congestion and the additional pressure that will result from increased housing density as a result of the planning reforms. 2. Introduce an exemption or deferral mechanism for the new planning reforms for all affected councils who meet or exceed their mandated housing targets so that traffic implications and additional infrastructure needs can be fully assessed before further development proceeds.
