Extend Transport Concessions to All International and Part-Time Students in NSW

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, Between 2023 and 2024, the Fair Fares campaign gathered over 21,000 signatures across NSW, urging the government to provide equitable public transport fare concessions for part-time and international students. Despite strong public support, NSW remains the only state without comprehensive fare concessions for international students. In its October 2024 inquiry, the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) recommended that Transport for NSW collaborate with the higher education sector and Study NSW to extend transport concessions to international and part-time students. These students contribute billions annually to the NSW economy, yet high transport costs impose significant financial strain, impacting their education and well-being. Part-time students also face major challenges, including caregiving responsibilities, low income, and rising living costs. They study part time to accommodate for low-paid or unpaid work, making transport concessions critical to easing financial pressure and supporting their academic goals. Providing concessions would promote equity amongst all tertiary students, encourage public transport use, reduce car dependency, and support environmental goals. We, the undersigned, urge the Legislative Assembly to call on the NSW Government to implement IPART’s recommendations and extend transport concessions to all students, regardless of their visa status or study mode. Students urgently need fair fares. It’s time for NSW to act.
