Provision of traffic lights at intersection of Nelson Bay Road and Vardon Road, Fern Bay, NSW, 2295

Petitioner: Mrs Lea Harris | Member: Crakanthorp, Tim | No. of Signatories: 177 | Date closed: 28/09/2021
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, We, the undersigned, are submitting this petition with regard to the provision of traffic lights at the intersection of Nelson Bay Road (NBR) and Vardon Road, Fern Bay, 2295. Currently there are no traffic lights at this busy intersection creating a dangerous situation for vehicles exiting Vardon Road, especially turning right onto NBR. Fern Bay has expanded substantially over the past 5-10 years. Located on Vardon Road, creating many vehicles, are Fern Bay Public School (growing year by year), Fern Bay Community Centre (used most days), Tillys Play and Development Centre (offering approx 95 places), and Newcastle Golf Course. Palm Lake Resort (over 50’s resort of 250 homes) and Bayway Village (over 50’s village of 490 homes) are located opposite each other on NBR. Residents have difficulty crossing NBR to access bus stops. Traffic lights at Vardon Road intersection would assist greatly. Defence Housing Australia have submitted a planning proposal for a housing development at the Stockton Rifle Range in Popplewell Road, Fern Bay. This proposal was endorsed by Port Stephens Council and the Minister for Planning issued ‘Gateway Determination’ in January 2020. This will create more vehicles using Vardon Road to exit onto NBR. We therefore demand that the NSW Government, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, and Transport for NSW, work with Port Stephens Council to urgently upgrade the intersection of NBR and Vardon Road, Fern Bay with traffic signals to make it safe for the community.
