Morisset West Gateway Precinct – a poorly conceived plan requiring further consultation.

Petitioner: Mr Marton Marosszeky | Member: Piper, Greg | No. of Signatories: 480 | Date closed: 16/09/2023
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The undersigned petitioners consider that the Morisset West Gateway Precinct proposal is ill conceived for the following reasons: 1. The Mandalong Valley floods and the proposed precinct is situated on the flood prone land. Further, any development will impede runoff and increase flooding severity and risk for all the people in the valley. 2. The proposed Morisset West Gateway Precinct represents more than 50% of the pasture of the Mandalong Valley, turning a beautiful rural asset into another industrial estate. This is not in the interest of the City of Lake Macquarie or of wider NSW. 3. The current green areas to the west of the freeway should be maintained because they create an important and valuable environmental fringe of the more developed areas of the city. These green areas are critical for maintaining and enhancing biodiversity, maintaining wildlife habitat and wildlife corridors, values that attract visitors to the area. 4. The proposal would further exacerbate traffic issues in the area, noting that Mandalong Road to Dooralong and Deaves Road to Cooranbong, both small country roads, are already carrying traffic beyond their capacity. For these reasons, we the undersigned petitioners ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to extend the period of public consultation for the Morriset West Gateway Precinct for a further two months, and not construct a transport hub on the current proposed site as this area is a floodplain and development would block the mouth of a beautiful valley.
