Statutory written off vehicles legislation amendment

Petitioner: Mr Christopher McDonnell | Member: Davies, Tanya | No. of Signatories: 110 | Date closed: 05/10/2021
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, I seek your assistance to amend Section 83 of the Road Transport Act 2013 (NSW written-off light vehicle register) to allow vehicles that have been declared a statutory write-off due to economic cost of repair only to be re-registered for use in NSW subject the following conditions: 1. That the vehicle owner before or after the vehicle was declared a statutory write-off is an individual; 2. That the individual has not previously registered a written-off vehicle in the two years prior; 3. That the vehicles pass’s a Roads and Maritime engineers’ inspection; and 4. That the vehicle is subject to a vehicle registration inspection yearly regardless of the age of the vehicle. I am sure that I speak for the majority of NSW residents who have lost vehicles to storm damage. Most of these vehicles are repairable and for no real reason other than the insurance company says its too expensive to repair they are written-off. This is resulting in unnecessary cost to the public and higher insurance premiums with these vehicles being sent overseas to be sold as second-hand cars or sold for parts. I myself have been the subject of this policy and to say I was confused and disappointed would be an understatement. You’re understanding and assistance in the matter would be greatly appreciated and requested.
