Ban Single Use Coffee Cups

Petitioner: Ms Kimberley Geritz | Member: Williamson, Richie | No. of Signatories: 428 | Date closed: 11/12/2023
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, As concerned citizens and advocates for environmental sustainability, we commend the initiatives taken by Western Australia and South Australia in adopting bans on single-use coffee cups. Now, we implore you to join the ranks of these trailblazing states and make New South Wales the next beacon of progress in our fight against plastic waste. The magnitude of the threat posed by single-use coffee cups to our environment is undeniable. The sheer volume of these cups, numbering in the billions nationwide, continues to accumulate in landfills, while their non-biodegradable nature poses a severe hazard to our oceans and marine life. We draw inspiration from the successful implementation of sustainable alternatives like the Green Caffeen reusable swap and go cup system, which has already gained prominence and established partnerships with councils, universities, and mines across all states of Australia. Implementing a ban on single-use coffee cups will not only curb the volume of waste inundating our landfills but also contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint associated with the production and disposal of these cups. We, the undersigned citizens, ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to introduce legislation to ban single-use coffee cups in NSW. Let us make NSW a shining example of sustainable leadership. We believe that with your support and commitment, we can build a future where single-use coffee cups are a thing of the past.
