Remove the Glebe Silo Billboards

Petitioner: Mr Patrick Nappa | Member: Parker, Jamie | No. of Signatories: 122 | Date closed: 04/11/2021
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, the silos at Glebe Island are heritage listed, the aim of which is to preserve the character and intent of the precinct. It was, in our opinion, a mistake to allow the original billboarding in the 1990s. With the lease renewal, there is an opportunity to reverse the error. The billboards on such an important part of Sydney's industrial history, are the equivalent of neon signs on the Opera House sails, or hoardings across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In fact, the presented DA includes a request to extend strong illumination until 1am, to the detriment of the health of individuals of the Glebe/Balmain/Pyrmont communities and beyond, in addition to the resident wildlife. There comes a time when commercial value must take second place to the rights and needs of the local citizens and tourist operators. Sydney is a great living city and a tourist destination. It is time to restore our old town, in its unique location, to the jewel that it can be. We call on the department of Planning, Industry & Environment to refuse the extension of the lease, and to prohibit use of the Glebe Silos as a site for advertising. The undersigned petitioners, therefore, ask the Legislative Assembly and the Department of Planning, Industry & Environment to: - Deny the use of the Glebe Silos as advertising space. - Prohibit the use of this space in the future for advertising & visual pollution at the Glebe Silos.
