Make COVID Safe Weddings Legal

Petitioner: Mr Oliver Thomson | Member: Haylen, Jo | No. of Signatories: 3,519 | Date closed: 02/09/2021
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, I am writing to address the current restrictions for those who would like to legally be married for a variety of reasons in a COVID Safe manner with the minimum of 5 attendees including the couple, the marriage celebrant and the two witnesses. In 2020 when we were in lockdown, marriage ceremonies of max 5 people could take place and this year it seems to be an oversight. I am proposing a max of 5 people (the minimum number required to legally be married as per The Marriage Act 1961). For many couples, during a time such as a health crisis and with so much uncertainty for the future, they would feel more comfortable knowing that they were married and not just de facto. This would assist if either party fell extremely ill or even died.
