Save Historic Glenlee, Lugarno Farm, and its Magnificent Trees

Petitioner: Mrs Megan Argent | Member: Coure, Mark | No. of Signatories: 2,096 | Date closed: 28/07/2021
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, "Glenlee", otherwise known as Lugarno Farm, is on the Georges River bordering Heinrichs Reserve. It is listed on the National Trust of Australia (NSW) register as part of the "Lugarno Early Settlers Local Heritage Precinct", and so is an irreplaceable part of St George district history. The property has been beautifully preserved by the same family as a working farm since 1908 and contains culturally significant evidence of aboriginal occupation, and has been maintained for all of the community. One hectare of the 2.5 hectare property is covered by undisturbed tall blackbutt eucalypt bushland. It is classified by the DPIE as "High Ecological Value". The property acts as a significant filter, protecting ecologically sensitive waterways from stormwater runoff from surrounding streets and provides a green corridor for locally rare Swamp Wallabies, Echidnas, Eastern Ospreys, Powerful Owls and other wildlife. Glenlee is being sold to developers right now. On behalf of the community, Lugarno Progress Association request that the Legislative Assembly intervenes to have the property dedicated as a public reserve so that access to the waterfront is improved, a community centre is established through repurposing existing buildings, waterways are protected and the views for 1000’s of visitors to Oatley Park are enhanced. Our desire is to find an outcome that conserves the significant historical and cultural heritage and the ecological function of Glenlee for the greater community. We only have one chance to save "Glenlee" (or Lugarno Farm) for future generations.
