Community based withdrawal, detox and residential rehab services for Far West NSW

Petitioner: Dionne Devlin | Member: Butler, Roy | No. of Signatories: 347 | Date closed: 04/12/2023
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, This petition has been created by the Alcohol and Other Drug Detoxification and Rehabilitation Steering Committee on behalf of the people of Broken Hill and the Far West region of NSW. The committee and community it represents wish to bring to the attention of the House the dire need for a residential facility to support people through withdrawal and rehabilitation from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The nearest NSW residential facility is over 800 kilometres from the Far West region. Gaining access to the opportunity to beat addiction in the Far West is therefore very complex when travel and the lack of community support are considered. A facility in the Far West would create opportunities for people suffering from addiction to receive the treatment and support required to gain better health outcomes. The cost savings to the health and justice systems justifies the expenditure to create a facility and the programmes required to support people living with addiction who need support to rehabilitate. The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to provide funding for both infrastructure and management for a community-based alcohol and other drug withdrawal, detoxification and rehabilitation centre in Broken Hill.
