Save our Bushlands on the Northern Beaches

Petitioner: Ms Nicole Romain | Member: Cross, Matt | No. of Signatories: 1,550 | Date closed: 04/07/2023
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, this petition of residents of New South Wales brings to the attention of the House: The Northern Beaches bushlands with unique ecology, wildlife and biodiversity is being subjected to a Development Delivery Plan (DDP) to be included in a State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) approved for six sites with further sites being identified. The local community and community groups made 1,132 submissions objecting to this DDP. In July 2022, the State of the Environment Report 2021 https://soe.dcceew.gov.au released stated ‘Our inability to adequately manage pressures will continue to result in species extinctions and deteriorating ecosystem conditions, which are reducing the environmental capital on which current and future economies depend.’ This DDP will threaten and destroy valuable bushlands, natural ecosystems, heritage sites, endangered and vulnerable species; seriously risk damage to Catchment areas; create significant bushfire hazard risks; create hard surfaces, increase flooding conditions; increase pollution in air, water, and land. We call on Members of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales to repeal this decision and: • Repeal DDP approval and inclusion in SEPP for six sites and future sites identified on the Northern Beaches to conserve natural bushlands. • Work with landowners to maintain as natural bushlands and find other alternatives to deliver tangible benefits to Aboriginal communities and protect and preserve bushlands into perpetuity. • Stop current SEPP processes with DDP’s rollout and work with traditional custodians and local Aboriginal community and experts for our natural environment to be preserved to last.
