Hala Kuo Papa – A Path Well-Trodden. Tonga’s relationship with NSW and Australia over 200 years

Tonga (1).pngHala Kuo Papa takes its name from Queen Sālote Tupou III's celebrated song about Tonga's three dynasties uniting in genealogy and strength. The concept reflects the Australia-Tonga relationship, where both countries have forged a pathway through shared spiritual and cultural heritage, education, defence, diplomacy, migration, and community resilience. This exhibition traces these interwoven journeys while charting a partnership that continues to deepen and evolve.

Tonga and Australia have forged a remarkable partnership across the Pacific. Beginning in the 1820s when Australian Wesleyan missionaries arrived in Tonga, this relationship has evolved from religious ties into comprehensive cooperation spanning governance, trade, education, defence, and cultural exchange.

Notably, Tonga's groundbreaking 1875 Constitution drew inspiration from both the New South Wales and the Hawaiian constitutions, reflecting our nations' long history of exchanging ideas and governance models across the Pacific.

2025 marks the Golden Jubilee of Tonga's Consulate-General in Sydney, serving as a vital bridge for the Tongan Australian Community. Formal diplomatic relationships commenced five years earlier.

This exhibition is a partnership between the Australian Museum, Tongan High Commission, Tonga Consulate-General, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian High Commission in Tonga, National Archives of Australia, and supported by the NSW Parliament and Newington College.

Hala Kuo Papa – A Path Well-Trodden. Tonga’s relationship with NSW and Australia over 200 years is being hosted at NSW Parliament by the Hon Ben Franklin, President of the Legislative Council.
