Parliament of NSW creates extraordinary classroom experiences

Get ready NSW, civics education is about to get a lot more engaging!
The oldest public building in Australia is set to become a unique second classroom to deepen learning for thousands of students from across the state this year.
The Parliament of NSW has unveiled its education program for 2024. With a rich program of guided interactive tours and onsite and virtual programs, every school in NSW can participate.
The Hon. Greg Piper MP, Speaker of the NSW Legislative Assembly, said the program will help young people understand how democracy works and relates to their everyday lives.
"We want young people and our future leaders from right across NSW to grasp how the parliament functions and, of course, to know the difference between our Parliament and the Federal Parliament in Canberra.
“The Parliament of NSW has been delivering these educational programs and tours for more than 40 years, but this year’s program is our biggest yet. I encourage people to get involved.”
Jeannie Douglass, Senior Manager for the Parliament’s Education team, said they are looking forward to a bumper year of participation.
“In 2023 more than 15,000 students joined our tours and programs, in person and online. With primary schools, high schools and school leaders all getting involved, 2023 was our biggest year yet post-COVID. We want 2024 to be even greater.”

The Hon. Ben Franklin MLC, President of the NSW Legislative Council, highlighted the inclusivity of the programs, ensuring that all students, regardless of their location, can get involved in civics education.
"Students from across the state are invited to visit NSW Parliament either in person or online.
In addition to the many programs and events at Parliament House in Sydney, we host live, interactive programs online for students in regional areas so they can experience Parliament and learn about our democratic processes.”
