Australasian Study of Parliament Group

The Australasian Study of Parliament Group (ASPG) is a politically non-partisan body that was established in 1978 to encourage and stimulate research, writing, teaching and discussion about parliamentary institutions, particularly those in Australasia and the South Pacific. The ASPG has chapters in ​all states and territories of Australia and in New Zealand.

Membership consists of parliamentarians, parliamentary officers, academics, teachers, journalists, students and other interested individuals.

​2026 conference

The ASPG holds an annual conference hosted by Australasian parliaments on a rotational basis.

This year's annual conference will be hosted by the NSW Chapter of the ASPG at the Parliament of NSW from Wednesday 30 September to Friday 2 October 2026.

The theme for this year is Parliaments when democracy is under challenge.

Democracy is the cornerstone of modern governance in our jurisdictions. It promotes individual freedoms, equality, and the right to participate in the open decision-making processes that shape our society. Despite its ideals, democracy is facing challenges on several fronts in the 21st century.

Challenges include the implications of new technologies, the proliferation of mis and disinformation, and declining trust and engagement. In light of these challenges, parliaments, parliamentarians and those who support the work of parliament face the challenge of how to respond to protect and preserve democratic values.

Conference registration

Registrations are now open to attend the 2026 ASPG conference, to be held at the Parliament of NSW, located on Macquarie Street in Sydney from 30 September to 2 October 2026.

Registrations are through Trybooking and close on 14 August 2026.

ASPG common information

​The most recent Annual General Meeting of the NSW Chapter of the ASPG took place in December 2025.

The main purpose of the meeting is to elect members to the NSW Chapter's Executive Committee and to discuss the Chapter's activities for the current and coming years.

Only ASPG members may attend the AGM.

​Membership of the NSW Chapter will cost $45 for the 2026-27 financial year and entitles you to:

  • online access to the Australasian Parliamentary Review​ (two issues per year) ​
  • discounts to attend the ASPG Annual Conference and other ASPG events
  • priority to attend seminars and other functions hosted or supported by the NSW Chapter.

The Aus​tralasian Parliamentary Review​ (APR) is the official journal of the Australasian Study of Parliament Group.

The APR is committed to encouraging and stimulating research, writing and teaching about the region's parliamentary institutions. Material on issues relating to parliament, whether arising from policy debates, major committee reports, political and electoral matters, referenda or significant court decisions, is published in the APR. Articles covering international events, where relevant to parliament, are also published.​

The APR is published online twice a year.​​
