Educated at Marulan public school and St Patrick's College, Goulburn; teacher with Education Department, Gundillion and Jerrabalgulla, house to house from 1891 until 1892, half time from 1892 until 1894; entered brother's business, A. Chapman & Co., auctioneers and agents, mining brokers, Braidwood and after 1898 in Sydney
