Mark Hodges MP appointed Temporary Speaker

Today the Assembly appointed Mr Mark Hodges MP, the Member for Castle Hill as Temporary Speaker. This was done to temporarily replace Ms Stephanie Di Pasqua MP, the Member for Drummoyne, who has taken a leave of absence for the arrival of her first child.

This appointment was made after the House adopted a new Sessional Order updating Standing Order 19 for the 58th Parliament. The change allows the Speaker to nominate up to five Temporary Speakers at the start of each Parliament to assist in presiding over proceedings. Importantly, where a Temporary Speaker is unavailable for an extended period, the Speaker can now make interim arrangements to appoint an additional Member without requiring a House resolution.
