Biography

Community activity

Commissioned as a Justice of the Peace. First President of Clarence River Pastoral Agricultural and Horticultural Association; Treasurer of the local Hospital; and a supporter of the School of Arts.

Personal information

Son of William Bawden and Mary Williams. Married Elizabeth Anne Hindmarsh in 1856 and had issue, 6 sons and 7 daughters. Church of England.

Qualifications, occupations and interests

Stock inspector and storekeeper. Arrived in New South Wales c. 1840 - 1842 and went to the Clarence District about 1843, becoming prominent in local affairs and eventually owning a large store in Grafton. In 1877 became Secretary and Director of the Clarence and New England Steam Navigation Company, assisting in the foundation and which had been incorporated in 1866. At time of death he was inspector of stock.
