Cause Category: Resignation - Federal contest
Notes: Caused by the resignation of former Premier Bertram Stevens. Stevens had been forced to resign as Premier a year earlier after an uprising on the UAP backbench had resulted in Stevens being defeated in Parliament on a vote of confidence. Stevens resigned to unsuccessfully contest the seat of Lang at the 1940 federal election.
