Notes: Joyce was missing from the SMH list of selected Labor candidates on 22 July, but was an affiliated Labor candidate according to the Worker. This could explain why the listed Free Trade candidate on 22 July, J G Griffin, did not nominate. Joyce was endorsed in George Reid's letter, SMH 27 July 1898, p.2 col.7. Various Independent affiliations based on the SMH 28 July, p.7 col.8.
Source: Year Book of Australia (1899), figures also used in Hughes and Graham (1975). Gundagai Times 2 August p.2 col.6, had slightly slightly different totals with Jones 214, Keenan 174 and O'Brien 144. Note that the SMH 29 July, reports earlier figures, but notes 'Later returns give Donaldson a final majority of 27', a majority matching the figures provided in the Year Book.
Corrections: Statistical Register reported 1577 formal votes, but this has been ignored and published results used. Issues of Tumut papers for 1998 are missing from NSW State Library collection, so published declaration could not be checked.
