Notes: Note that this was a tied result decided by the casting vote of the The Returning Officer. Based on his personal views of the two candidates and their political positions, the Returning Officer chose to vote for Jones. A later re-count by the Elections and Qualifications Committee endorsed the victory by Jones, producing the totals Jones 476, Channon 461, Emanuel 204, Newman 172, Informal 28. Hughes and Graham (1975) have party affiliations around the wrong way. Channon was the selected Free Trade candidate and Jones the selected Protectionist.
