Notes: McMillan was elected as a Free Trader in 1895 but contested the 1898 election as a selected National Federal candidate. Not previously in Parliament, Archer was listed in both the SMH and Telegraph as a Ministerialist, but did not make the selected list of Free Trade candidate, nor did his name appear in George Reid's letter, SMH 27 July, p.2 col.7. James Eve was also listed as a non-selected Ministerialist. After the election, Archer was included as a Ministerialist in the list of elected candidates, SMH 30 July, p.10 col.1. In the SMH 28 July 1898, p.9 col.1, it was mentioned that McMillan had been absent from the colony through the campaign, and his absence was considered an important factor in his defeat.
