Notes: Neither Harris nor McElhone were listed with a party affiliation, apart from the Star calling them both Opposition candidates in its results pages. The Town and Country Journal (3 August 1895, p.15) referred to both Chapman and McElhone as Free Traders, and with McElhone's past affiliation with the party, Independent Free Trade seems the most appropriate affiliation. The Daily Telegraph called him an Independent MP in its election results. Given these doubts over the Star's listing, Harris has been classified as an Independent.
