Notes: Death of Alfred Lamb. The story that follows the DT report of nominations mentions possible splits in the Trades and Labour Council after its President PJ Brennan did not nominate for the by-election as expected. Nairn (pp.43-44) deals with this incident, stating that Brennan's withdrawl came about after some of the maritime unions had decided to support AG Taylor instead. AG Taylor gave a rousing speech on the hustings, describing himself according to the DT as a 'professed labour champion first, a pronounced opponent of this government next, and a free trader anywhere afterwards.' His victory was a major defeat for the government.
