Qualifications, occupations and interests
Grazier and farmer. When he was young, his mother moved to Gladesville after the death of his father. Educated at Reverend Hillyer's School, Bathurst and Sydney Grammar School; joined the staff of the Joint Stock Bank (later Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited); held various positions in country centres including Hill End; manager of Wellington branch from 1874 until 1900; purchased Towri, 6000 acres c.1880, Nanima estate, 8000 acres in 1894, and Murrungundy, 8000 acres c.1909. Member of Farmers and Settlers Association; President of Wellington Hospital Board; oarsman in youth.
Military Service
Joined volunteers captain, 2nd Regiment from 1888 until 1896, major in 3rd Regiment from 1896; active in recruiting in the Boer War.

Son of Robert Johnston Barton, retired naval officer and grazier, and his wife Emily Mary Darvall, daughter of Major Edward Darvall and his wife Emily Johnson. Married Annie Smith on 6 December 1877 and had issue, 4 daughters and 4 sons. Buried in Nanima. Church of England faith. His mother was the sister of Sir John Bayley Darvall, a Member of both the Legislative assembly and the Legislative Council. Andrew Barton Paterson (Banjo Patterson), the poet and journalist, was the son of his sister, Rose Barton.
