Lawyer (solicitor). Arrived in Sydney with parents in 1847. Educated at St Mary's Seminary and privately. Became a junior clerk in Customs Department in 1864 and a clerk of the Supreme Court in 1872; chief clerk of Supreme Court from 1874 until 1876, also Deputy Registrar of Divorce Court and Secretary of Barristers Admission Board. Admitted as a solicitor in 1875. Prothonotary and Curator of Intestate Estates, and registrar of Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Courts from 1876 until 1880; then practised privately in partnership. Director of Sydney Hospital from 1882 until 1887; Member of State Children Relief Board from 1882 until 1892. Commissioner of Colonial and Indian Exhibition. Royal Commissioner on Statute Law Constitution in 1896. Astute politcal organiser.
