Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist. Arrived in Sydney in December 1841. Gained wide pastoral experience on stations of uncle John Tooth. Occupied run in Wide Bay district in 1846 with brother. Acquired further runs in Wide Bay, Burnett and Darling Downs districts and in 1853 purchased Clifton near Allora and acquired other stations from Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers to Gulf of Carpentaria, and operated boiling down works near Ipswich for five years. Partnership dissolved in 1856; Surrendered title of Clifton to Bank of New South Wales in 1875. Involved in many disputes with neighbours, selectors and employees. Lived in fashionable Sydney suburbs and sent children to prominent schools; founder of the Union Club. On the Committee of the Sydney Club. Member of the Committees of the Society for Supression of Cattle Stealing and of the Agricultural Society of New South Wales. Cousin of Robert Tooth and second cousin of (Sir) Robert Lucas Tooth.
