Naval diver and union secretary. At an early age worked in coal mines in Rhondda Valley, Wales; arrived in Western Australia in 1909, became a diver for Lloyd's underwriters in Western Australia and foreman diver on construction of Henderson Naval Base; obtained master mariner's certificate; brought dredge from Western Australia to Sydney in 1924, employed by Maritime Services Board for fourteen years; member of Dredge and Maritime Service Employees Association, vice president, president, then New South Wales secretary 1939-1957, established union headquarters in Newcastle; foundation president of Newcastle branch Ex-Naval Men's Association, secretary for twenty years; member of Newcastle Welsh Choral Society
Military Service
Joined Royal Navy in c.1902 and served on China Coast and Persian Gulf.
