Ban the release of balloons in NSW

Petitioner: Ms Karen Joynes | Member: Faehrmann, Cate | No. of Signatories: 5,172 | Date closed: 25/04/2022 | Status: Presented 10/05/2022
To the President and Members of the Legislative Council, the petitioners of New South Wales state that the NSW law allowing up to 19 balloons to be released must be removed. Scientific and anecdotal evidence proves balloons kill wildlife and farm animals, and released balloons end up as litter. Balloons are considered single use plastics as they do not biodegrade. The petitioners request that the House ban the release of lighter than air (helium filled) balloons and reduces to zero the number of released balloons allowed under the New South Wales Protection of the Environment Operations Amendment (Balloons) Act 2000 No 82.
