Protect our Environment and Community: Reject the Proposed Hunter Transmission Project (HTP) Southern Corridor

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, The Petition of the citizens of New South Wales brings to the attention of the House the extensive and irreversible environmental damage which will be caused by the proposed Hunter Transmission Project (HTP) Southern Corridor through Olney State Forest, Watagan State Forest, Pokolbin State Forest, Corrabare State Forest, Corrabare North Flora Reserve and Jilliby State Conservation Area. These impacts include: • 762 ha of native vegetation cleared with direct impacts on 7 threatened ecological communities (TECs) listed under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW) and 3 TECs listed as critically endangered under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth), including potential serious and irreversible impacts (SAII) on 2 TECs, • Direct impacts on 38 threatened flora species, including potential SAII on 8 threatened flora species, • Direct impacts on 28 threatened fauna species, including the critically endangered regent honeyeater (Anthochaera phrygia), swift parrot (Lathamus discolor) and three endangered frog species, as well as potential SAII on 6 threatened fauna species. The Hunter community has consistently objected to the proposed corridor due to its impacts on biodiversity, local landholders and businesses (including agriculture, viticulture and tourism) and regional towns, and have requested alternative upgrades to existing infrastructure instead. The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to request the: 1. NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces reject the proposed Hunter Transmission Project (HTP) Southern Corridor, & 2. Energy Corporation of NSW (EnergyCo) look at alternative upgrades of existing infrastructure.
