To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
This petition from residents of New South Wales draws to the attention of the House the significant unmet need for alcohol and other drug detoxification services across rural and regional communities.
In the New England Northwest of NSW, people requiring detoxification and rehabilitation are often required to travel significant distances away from family, carers, and local support networks.
This is a barrier to accessing timely and effective treatment and can reduce the likelihood of sustained recovery.
The people of Tamworth and the Northwest are demanding increased access to drug and alcohol detoxification to improve the health, well-being, and safety of the community.
The undersigned petitioners, therefore, ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to:
1. Retain the former Banksia facility in public hands for the purposes of a drug and alcohol detoxification unit.
2. Provide the funds necessary to refurbish the unit to ensure it is a clinical, modern, culturally appropriate unit for patients to receive detoxification services.
