Bringing Parliament to more schools through new regional outreach program

As schools across NSW start the new year, the Parliament of NSW is launching its 2025 events calendar, offering students – including those in rural and regional areas – engaging opportunities to deepen their understanding of democracy.

The calendar brings the workings of Parliament directly into classrooms across NSW and includes details of the newly developed regional outreach program.

“Our mission is to ensure that every student, regardless of where they live, has the opportunity to connect with democracy so they can become more active and informed citizens who can participate in democracy,” The Hon. Ben Franklin MLC, President of NSW Parliament’s Legislative Council said.

The Hon. Greg Piper, Speaker of NSW Parliament’s Legislative Assembly, said: “Through our increased regional outreach, we’re bringing the Parliament to the local communities in rural and regional NSW to provide hands-on learning experiences.

“Distance should never hinder the opportunity to learn about democracy, as every community, regardless of location, deserves access to those values and processes that shape our democratic society.”

The Communications, Engagement and Education team will bring their diverse learning experiences to local events, expos, and shows in rural and regional areas throughout the year.

Schools across NSW are also invited to visit and engage with the workings of Parliament at Macquarie Street in Sydney. School tours are available each term – come and see democracy in action!

“The new regional and remote travel subsidy is a game-changer for NSW schools - we have already had phone calls from schools wanting to take advantage of this program,” said Jeannie Douglass, Senior Manager of Education.

 “Last year we reached more than 37,000 people including 15,000 students through in-person visits and virtual programs. With the calendar mapped out, we’re aiming for a bumper year!”

There are also specialised workshops available:

• Guided Tours: schools visit us in Macquarie Street
• Legal Studies workshops: tailored Year 11 workshops to promote understanding of the Australian legal system
• Visit Us at Our House - online program: interactive session to introduce Parliament to primary school students
• Parli-Flicks Short Film Award: students from Years 5 to 12 explain in a one-minute clip what law they want passed
• Leadership Events: aimed at inspiring the next generation of Members of Parliament including the Secondary School Leadership Program.
