Qualifications, occupations and interests
Farmer. Parents died when he was young. With assistance of aunt learned a trade as a ships carpenter at Dundee then Newport; learned some boat building and went to sea as a ship's carpenter. Arrived in Hobart in Tasmania. c. 1844 went to New South Wales; became a ship builder at Ulladulla in partnership with brother, firm building 11 or 12 ships. Abandoned ship building c.1855, purchasing Boolgata Estate in the Ulladulla district and became a farmer.

Alderman of Ulladulla and was a Mayor several times.
Personal
Married Sarah Gates on c.1850 at Sydney and had issue, 1 daughter and 4 sons. Church of England. His nephew, Winter Warden, was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
