Qualifications, occupations and interests
Property owner and retired businessman. Arrived at Hobart Town in 1827. Journeyed to Sydney. Purchased 2,560 acres on Mologlo Plain. Visited England in 1829 and returned in 1830. Established an importing and mercantile firm, Smith Bros at Sydney. Built a steam ferry in Sydney but sold it in 1832. Partnership was dissolved in 1832. Became a Director of Commercial Banking Company of Sydney in 1835. Chairman in 1853. Returned to England in 1836, coming back to New South Wales in 1846. Provisional director of proposed railway association in 1846; At a later time was appointed government director of Sydney Railway Company. Retired as a merchant in 1848 leaving the business to his nephew. In 1846 lived at Darling Point and then Manly. Donated land for Congregationalist Church at Wollongong in 1856.
