Arrived in New South Wales with parents in 1881; apprenticed at sixteen in father's business building business, established as Howie Brothers, later became Howie, Moffat and Company Pty Ltd; became a senior partner and chairman of directors in c.1923; chairman of directors of Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company Limited, of Manly Gas Company and following the amalgamation of the North Shore Gas Company; managing director of family company Navua Pty Ltd; director of Flemington Brick Company Pty Ltd, Clay Industries Pty Ltd, St Peters Brick Company Pty Ltd, Suburban Land and Investment Company Limited, Clyde Brick Company Pty Ltd, Metropolitan Brick Company Pty Ltd, Southern Blue Metal Quarries Limited, Southern Portland Cement Company Limited, owned a jersey stud farm at Windsor.
