Landed proprieter. Born of well-to-do family. Educated at John Mills' school, Parramatta, and under W.T Cape. Entered J.R Young's Sydney counting house to learn business. Inherited Box Hill and 5,000 acres at Yass Plains from father, who died in 1842; acquired much city and suburban real estate, property in Queensland and New Zealand. Jeremiah and Bongongo stations in Tumut and Gundagai districts. Not mentioned as a squatter in list published in 1859 and 1866. Founding member of Union Club in 1857. Always sat on cross benches and disliked lawyers in Parliament. Responsible for 1874 Triennial Parliaments Act, advocated payment of members.
