Grocer and wholesaler. Arrived in Sydney as a Bounty immigrant on 23 January 1842. Worked in squatting districts then as a clerk in Sydney. Opened wholesale grocery business in 1847. Entered into a partnership with his brother-in-law from 1859 - 1868. From mid 1860's speculated in land. By 1871 had 4 runs and was a partner in 18 others. Director of Australian Joint Stock Bank. Mutual Life Association of Australasia. Sydney Exchange Company. Commercial Banking Company of Australia. Australian Gaslight Company. Member of Royal Society of New South Wales. Elder of Presbyterian Church. Interests include literature, history and philosophy.
