Qualifications, occupations and interests
Merchant and Company Director. Educated at Aske's Hospital School, London. Became a clerk to shipping and insurance broker. Arrived in Australia in 1833 after fathers business failed. Opened a store at Hinton and became a postmaster. Became a farmer and returned to Sydney. Went into business as an auctioneer, tallow and hide merchant. Bought Californian gold then Australian gold from 1851. Lost heavily on shipping ventures and became bankrupt in 1859. Discharged June 1860. returned to Sydney and became a merchant importing wheat and flour from California and Chile. Founder and auditor for Australian Mutual Provident Society. Original shareholder in Sydney exchange Company. Visited England 1884 until 1885. Travelled to California, New Zealand and Europe. Member of Royal Society of New South Wales 1874. Prominent in Pitt Street Congregationalist Church.
