Medical practitioner; surgeon; explorer; pioneer settler. Joined the army as a surgeon and served in the armed transports from 1797 until the peace. In June 1802 he arrived in New South Wales as a naval surgeon. Later was appointed as a medical officer and magistrate at Castle Hill. In January 1804 he was moved to Sydney. Applied for a permanent position in the medical service of the colony and was sent to Newcastle as assistant surgeon. Resigned his services and was granted 500 acres of land at Cabramatta for his services at Newcastle and later 600 acres at Minto. Later undertook explorations in the Moss Vale district and to Bathurst and country around Goulburn. Ran into debt and experienced ten years of litigation which led to ill health, as well as the worry of drought and falling prices for wool, ended with him taking his own life.
