Commenced work in a grocer's shop and later in city retail stores; commercial traveller in 1904; was at a later time a clerk in the public service; organiser with the Public Service Association from 1917 until 1919; member of Paddington branch of the Australian Natives Association. President of the New South Wales Literary and Debating Social Union in 1901. President of Paddington labour League and founder of Darlinghurst branch; member of central executive in 1908 and 1910.
