Members' Code of Conduct

About the Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct aims to assist members of the NSW Parliament in performing their parliamentary duties and obligations to the House, their electorates and the people of NSW.

Members are required to base their conduct on a consideration of the public interest and avoid conflict between personal interest and their duties as a member of Parliament.

Key areas covered by the code include:

• Improper influence - members must not act as a paid advocate in any parliamentary proceeding, or seek to affect a decision to further their private interests.
  
• Use of public resources - public resources should not be used to confer private benefit on a member, or another person or entity.
• Use of confidential information - members must not use confidential information obtained through their parliamentary duties for their own or another person's private benefit.
• Disclosure of interests - members must comply with the requirements to disclose their interests including property, interests and positions in corporations, income, debts and gifts.
• Conflict of interest - members must avoid, resolve, or disclose any conflict between their private interests and  the public interest.
• Gifts - members must disclose all gifts and benefits they receive in connection with their official duties.
