140 - NEWCASTLE LIGHT RAIL - BUSINESS COMPENSATION

That this House:

(1) Notes the decision to compensate businesses in the Sydney central business district for opportunities lost due to the construction of the Sydney light rail.

(2) Notes Newcastle businesses impacted by the similar project in the Newcastle central business district have been denied compensation and suffered as a result.

(3) Notes that despite the Minister for Transport, during his last visit to Newcastle, saying that business is booming, Bob Hawes, Chief Executive Officer of the Hunter Business Chamber, conversely describes the local commercial and retail trade as patchy.

(4) Urges the Government to do more to support small businesses in Newcastle during this difficult transition period.
