General Business

General Business

Thursday sitting day includes time set aside to deal with General Business, this starts after Government Business at 10.10 am.

General Business is distinct from Government Business, and includes the business for which Members have given notice earlier, including notices of motions and private members' bills.

The current order of business for the 56th Parliament provides for general business is:

  • Notices of motion for Bills  - introduction of new private members' bills (allocated up to 20 mins)
  • General Business Orders of the Day for Bills  - debate on private members' bills already introduced – (for up to 60 minutes)
  • Debate of General Business Notice of Motions - Debate on General Business, General Notices and Orders of the Day (not being bills) -  (until 1.30 pm)

Division and quorum calls now permitted on Thursdays after 10.10 am

In March 2016, the House agreed to changes in the sitting day schedule, these affected the Thursday sitting day, with regards to the restriction on the calling of a division and the restriction on quorum calls before 10.30am (Standing Order 187 and Standing Order 45).  These have now been amended so that divisions may now be called and Members may now call attention to the want of a quorum after 10.10 am on a Thursday morning.
