Mandate Trauma-Informed Training for All NSW Police Officers

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly. The undersigned petitioners call for urgent legislative action to implement mandatory, trauma-informed training for all NSW police officers, with a minimum of 40 hours dedicated to this essential education. Trauma is a widespread and often invisible factor in many encounters between police and the public. Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, childhood abuse, homelessness, mental health crises, and First Nations communities are particularly vulnerable to being retraumatised by systems that fail to recognise the signs and impacts of trauma. Police are frequently the first point of contact in these situations. Without adequate trauma-informed training, officers may unintentionally escalate distress, causing further harm or undermining trust in the justice system. A basic understanding of how trauma affects behaviour, communication, and memory is not only humane — it is essential for effective, safe, and just policing. Several jurisdictions globally have introduced trauma-informed approaches with positive results — including reduced use of force, fewer complaints, and improved community relationships. NSW must not fall behind. We therefore urge the Legislative Assembly to introduce and pass legislation mandating a minimum of 40 hours of trauma-informed training for all NSW police officers, both current and incoming. This investment in education is a step toward safer communities, better outcomes, and a policing culture that recognises the dignity and complexity of the people it serves.
